Community Center Restoration Project

Progress Update on the Charlton Community Center Restoration Project

This summer, the Town approved an official committee focused on restoration of this historic building, which has served for over 150 years as a Knights of Pythias lodge, our own Town Hall, and a community meeting place, in the heart of our Historic District.

This committee is developing a restoration plan, identifying sources of funding, and making recommendations to the Town Board for work to be done. Here's some recent activity we wish to share with the community:

Work has begun mitigating drainage issues at the road. This will improve the effectiveness of the foundation drains, and help reduce the significant water issues the building currently faces. The Town is currently pursuing a grant opportunity for approximately $10,000 in matching funds to support this project.

Recently, the committee has forwarded the technical part of the request for proposal (RFP) for an architectural services partner, to the Town for additional contributions.

We held our first community fundraiser at the August Concert in the Park. Thank you to all who came out to show your support!

In June 2022, Rep. Paul Tonko agreed to place the Charlton Community Center on a short-list of "shovel-ready, shovel-worthy" projects. He's proposing a $540,000 grant to assist in restoration work. There is a bit of competition here, and is subject to legislation approval, but if this does come through, it will be a huge win for Charlton.
