Minutes of Technology
Advisory Board Meeting of May 15, 2007
Present: J Tasse, Chairman, G. Eggleston, J.
Kelley, P. St. John, M. Schorr, Gardner-Town Board liaison,
Al Smith-guest, Joe Egry-guest
The meeting was called to order at 7:05 pm. Joe Egry, a Charlton resident, expressed his interest in joining
the TAB because of his interest and background in computer systems and a desire
to serve the Town.
1. The minutes of the 4-17-meeting was approved.
2. J. Kelley reported on his investigation of
prices of consultants for a system administrator’s duties. Prices were “all
over the map” ranging from $50 to $150 per hour. .
3. Regarding the appointment of Al Smith as
System Administrator, Tasse has not yet gone to the Town Board with the TAB
recommendation because we did not yet have the estimated costs for consultants
to perform these duties (see item 2).
4. The
Town Board approved spending of up to $800 for the purchase of the McAfee Total
Protection package for 15 computers.
5. The
use of another firewall was discussed (not 2). The Town Clerk is getting a
formal quote and if she has questions she should call J. Kelley.
6.
The draft by J.
Tasse of the revised System Administrator’s duties and responsibilities was
discussed. Does the job require going out for bids? B. Gardner said that it is
required. J. Kelley will check other towns on how they handle the job. The
person should be local because of the need for short response time. The next
step is to draft an RFP. B. Gardner said that there should be a presentation to
the Town Board at the June agenda meeting to demonstrate the need for the
position and the requirements. Tasse said that Eggleston, Gardner and St. John
should plan on making up a slide showing the cost to the town of security
breaches from the computer system security seminar that they attended.
7.
The TAB would
like to see the Town Hall spec for the communications system showing computer
connections. The TAB will have a representative attend the next Town Hall
construction meeting. B. Gardner will check with the architect to confirm that
the communications connections are in the spec.
8.
J. Kelley will
send the TAB members the new web page setup and the TAB members will comment.
9.
J. Tasse
commented that the Town Clerk reported on the Town of Ballston experience with
a system administrator. They have a technology committee. Their consultant
handles both the fire and communication systems. They pay $11,000 per year for
both functions.
10. P.
St. John made a motion to recommend to the Town Board the appointment of Joe
Egry to the TAB. The motion passed.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:26 pm.
The next meeting will be on June 19, 2007 at
7 pm in the Town Hall.
