Pedestrians
are 15 times more likely to become victims of traffic accidents than
motorists, according to the newest ''Mean Streets''
report by the Surface Transportation Policy Project (STPP), which found the
2001 pedestrian fatality rate per 100 million miles
reaching 20.1 deaths, in contrast to 1.3 among car and truck travelers -- a
disproportionate risk mostly due to multi-lane streets,
scarcity of crosswalks and sidewalks, and general lack of focus on
pedestrians
