The Town of Charlton is seeking to advance the primary recommendation of the 2007 comprehensive plan by successfully planning for preservation of farmland.  The town envisions creating a farmland protection plan that establishes a rating system to evaluate farms for protection as willing landowner come forward, provides an updated inventory of the existing agricultural operation in the town, and establishes tools and strategies for landowners and the town to maximize farmland preservation into the future. The plan will likely also contain zoning recommendations for the town to consider to further realize the goal of farmland protection.  Funding for this project is through a grant from the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets.  The town is being assisted by Behan Planning Associates.   

A public workshop will be held in the fall.  A meeting announcement will be posted on this web page, and will be included in the Charlton newsletter.  Notes from committee meetings will be posted here as they become available. A public workshop to present the Draft Farmland Protection Plan has been scheduled for Wednesday April 29th, 7 PM, at the Charlton Freehold Presbyterian Church. Everyone is invited to attend and provide comments on the draft plan.
