THE FESTIVAL OF FAMILIES

Family Albums:
In celebration of the Town of Charlton’s Bicentennial, 1792-1992, the Festival of Families was conceived in order to pay tribute to the early settlers and families of Charlton. The Festival opened at Harmony Hall on June 28, 1992 and was open thereafter one Sunday each month through October. Winifred McConchie Palmateer, a retired school teacher, and many local residents worked throughout the year preparing albums of their memories of life in Charlton, along with photographs and clippings. Between twenty-five and thirty of these albums were shared at the Festival.

The Early Families of Charlton:
The prolific compilation of genealogies of early Charlton families by the late Barbara Holbrook was computerized by Joyce Riedinger who was present with computer to aid in the perusal of those records. In addition, sixteen albums containing photos, newspaper clippings and other information for approximately seventy-five of these early families were available along with wall displays (consisting of charts and photos) of several of these early settlers whose descendants still reside in Charlton.

Photo Exhibit:
Over 100 early photographs portraying life of our "Neighbors of Yesterday" had been collected and were on display.

Curtain Hanging at Harmony Hall The Festival of Families was held again in 1993, when the old 'stage curtain' was lowered for the first time in 40 years, and again in 1994. Many photos taken at the Festival of Families along with many of the early old photos that were on display are in the Harmony Photo Album.
