Charles, Maria and family moved to Charlton from West Sand Lake, Rensselaer County, in 1840. They lived in a house on the corner of Dawson Road and Crane Street which has since been replaced by a more modern structure. Charles purchased the Holmes Mill, then run by a Timothy Marvin, relationship unknown. They made a very popular buckwheat flour under the brand name of "Ne-Plus-Ultra" and sold it in Albany. William Marvin ("Uncle Will" who resided with us in his later years and lived to be 97) would accompany his father Charles when they made the deliveries to Albany with the horse and wagon. Downtown State Street in Schenectady was then a cow pasture after passing what is now Veteran’s Park. There were quite a few wolves still around the area in those days and, as a boy, William used to shoot them from the Mill window. Charlton was a very flourishing place at that time, with several churches, hotels, factories, mills and stores.

On April 1, 1856, Grandfather Richard Marvin purchased one half interest in the Mill from his father Charles for $1200.00. An agreement was drawn up between C.&R.H. Marvin and Cornelius Groot & John Dawson on September 2, 1856 for construction of a stone dam to replace the wooden dam, for the sum of $950.00 and one yoke of oxen.

Richard married Almeda Millard, daughter of Charlton residents, Major and Laura Millard, on December 22, 1852 and they lived in the Holmes house across from the Mill. Richard, who at one time could have had an appointment to West Point, chose to become a carpenter instead. In his spare time in the winter, he also made wagon wheels for the Heaton Wagon Factory in the Village, as did other Charlton men. He made them in the basement of the Holmes house which had a fireplace. The neighborhood fellows would come in, gather around the fireplace and swap stories.

. . . . . Aunt Laura inscribed her name on one of the window panes of the Holmes house when she was a young girl and that window pane has been preserved by every owner since.

In 1875, Richard and Almeda purchased the Banta Place on the hill overlooking Charlton Village. The rear part of the house had been built in 1794 by one of the first doctors in town, Dr. William Mead. An existing two story cabin across the way was later moved over by oxen and added on to the 17954 section. This was used as a summer kitchen. Rev. Clancy, pastor of the Freehold Presbyterian Church in the Village, purchased the place in 1829. Shortly thereafter, he had the larger front section built on.
