Joseph LaRue 1730-1810 Charlton "He was one of the 1775 Freeholders to settle in Charlton area. He first held 300 acres at Harmony corners, and later, in 1786, he purchased Small Lot 7, 200 acres - 5,000 acre tract. The farm is one of the century farms and is now owned by the R. Nelson LaRue (1991) a direct descendant of Joseph LaRue. Joseph LaRue was one of the two Justices to preside over the first Annual Town Meeting in 1792." -- from Beyond the Horizon - 1981 "....The family consisted of Joseph, his wife Ann Disbrow, and their 10 children, the youngest born the year they arrived. A log home was built in what is pasture on the present farm. Over the years, a blacksmith shop, still, tannery, saw mill and a saloon were built along the creek. Slave quarters were also built, but the only mention of slaves was made by Joseph in town records, "My wench, Bessie, had a black baby." Joseph made friends with the Indians living nearby.
