from Saratoga County Heritage: "His son Gideon Hawley, Jr., who resided east of Freehold Church graduated from Union College in 1809 with training in law. He was intensely interested in promoting education. Four years later, in 1813, he was appointed the first Superintendent of Common Schools of New York State. Under his guidance was laid the foundation of the common school system which has been adopted throughout the State of New York."

She died on 12 Apr 1801. She was buried in Jeremiah Smith Cemetery, Charlton, NY. They had the following children:   2 F i Sarah HAWLEY was born about 1777. She died on 15 Sep 1836. She was buried in Pine Grove Cemetery, Charlton, NY.         Sarah married Simeon WOODRUFF. Simeon was born about 1766. He died on 30 Jun 1840. He was buried in Pine Grove Cemetery, Charlton, NY.   3 M ii Elisha HAWLEY was born about 1779. He died on 20 May 1797. He was buried in Jeremiah Smith Cemetery, Charlton, NY. + 4 F iii Peninoh HAWLEY was born about 1781. She died on 18 Feb 1803.   5 F iv Hannah HAWLEY.         Hannah married Abraham SAVAGE on 13 Feb 1823 in Charlton, Saratoga Co. NY.   6 M v Anson HAWLEY.   7 F vi Eunice HAWLEY.   8 M vii Obadiah HAWLEY died on 19 Feb 1790.   9 M viii Curtis HAWLEY.   10 M ix Lemuel HAWLEY.   11 M x Gideon HAWLEY Jr. was born in 1785 in Charlton, Saratoga Co. NY. He died in 1870.         Gideon married Marguerite LANSING daughter of Jacob LANSING and Anna QUACKENBUSH. Marguerite was born on 5 Nov 1790. She died on 22 May 1869. + 12 M xi Roswell HAWLEY was born on 15 Nov 1791. He died on 20 May 1859. Gideon married (2) Elizabeth. Elizabeth was born about 1752. She died on 24 Jul 1822. She was buried in Jeremiah Smith Cemetery, Charlton, NY. Second Generation 4. Peninoh HAWLEY was born about 1781. She died on 18 Feb 1803. She was buried in Jeremiah Smith Cemetery, Charlton, NY. Peninoh married Richard TAYLOR son of John TAYLOR Esq. and Chloe COX on 17 Feb 1800. Richard was born on 24 Apr 1777. He died on 22 Aug 1847 in Charlton, Saratoga Co. NY. He was buried in Pine Grove Cemetery, Charlton, NY. They had the following children:   13 F i Sally TAYLOR was born in 1802. She died on 28 Nov 1802. She was buried in Jeremiah Smith Cemetery, Charlton, NY.   14 M ii Anson Hawley TAYLOR was born in 1803.         Anson married DENNISON. 12. Roswell HAWLEY was born on 15 Nov 1791. He died on 20 May 1859. He was buried in Jeremiah Smith Cemetery, Charlton, NY. Roswell married Hulitje VANHOVENBERGH daughter of Henry VANHOVENBERGH and Esther DUMOND on 1 May 1823 in Charlton, Saratoga Co. NY. Hulitje was born on 12 Sep 1794. She died on 30 Mar 1873. She was buried in Jeremiah Smith Cemetery, Charlton, NY. They had the following children:   15 M i James H. HAWLEY was born on 16 Jul 1824. Adelaide was born on 20 Jun 1846 in ,,,GUATEMALA. She died on 17 Feb 1883.   18 M iv Henry VanHovenburgh HAWLEY was born on 28 Nov 1831. He died on 14 Dec 1834. He was buried in Jeremiah Smith Cemetery, Charlton, NY.   19 M v Elisha H. HAWLEY was born on 6 Feb 1834. He died on 16 Mar 1862 in NYC. He was buried in Jeremiah Smith Cemetery, Charlton, NY.   20 M vi John Savage HAWLEY was born on 28 Jun 1836. He was christened on 12 Feb 1837 in Freehold,Charlton,NY.         John married Margaret REED.
